SciFi Saturday Special Feature, "The Wereman of Mesa"

Full Moon tonight...

I remember well what happened when last that orb shone brightly across the desert…and the horror that followed.

As its light streamed through the open window, I started to feel strange, twitching and snarling...

I dropped to the floor, unable to control my tremors...

as a strange metamorphosis began to occur...

I called out to my vet, "What's happening to me?" and thus she replied:

"Even a dog who is pure in heart and says his prayers by night, may become a man when the mandrake blooms and the winter moon is bright."

The Campaign Spot

The first plank in Sam’s platform:

Here in Arizona it’s well known that the one of the fiercest “hot button” issues in the political sphere regards securing the southern border and enforcing our immigration laws. However, there’s been no discussion at all about a much deeper and insidious form of discrimination that occurs each and every hour of the day. I’m speaking of course about Canine discrimination. Canine citizens in Arizona, and indeed across the country, are denied basic access to their people’s places of work, restaurants and grocery stores. This must end! If elected, I plan to introduce legislation that will prohibit the anti-dog policies so prevalent in our society.

Send me to the US Senate, and send a message to all those who would deny us our right to roam freely wherever our people are!

Paid for by the concerned citizens for canine rights, "Sam! for Senate" committee.

Team USA in Disarray*

VANCOUVER — The United States Dog Bathing Association wanted to put its best brush forward at the Olympics. That hasn't happened. After losing 4 straight matches in Vancouver this week, the Women's team will be going home disappointed after a final defeat by the Canadians.

"We really thought this was our year," sighed team captain Madge "Soapy" Singleton. "We came to win, bringing our own special soap, a pair of the best bathers in the league, and our finest dog, Sam. But we were just out-scrubbed."

None of the other team members had a comment for this report, although Sam did take the offered treat before slowly walking back to the locker room.

*No dogs were bathed during the making of this post

Rainy Day

It is a very rainy day outside, again. Isn’t this supposed to be sunny Arizona?

Next weekend I am riding in the Lost Dutchman Day’s Parade with my sister. This weekend I had planned on getting my Friesian mare, Isabel, prepared for it. Other than a short ride on Friday, I haven’t been able to! Hopefully, I will be able to clean her up before next Saturday!

Sam came with me this morning to survey the mud and rain at my Mom’s house and help feed the horses. Of course, as always, he rode shotgun.

Hey you! Look at me! Yes, you, buddy!

Sam did quite a bit exploring at my Mom's house. He didn't mind getting rained on.

What's that you see there, Sam? Oh, the cats. It looks like they may need an umbrella!

Sam decided that he had better keep an eye on them! You never know what cats will do!

Don't get too close to them, Mom!

Sam was thoroughly soaked by the time we finished feeding horses.

I think I might need a towel, Mom!

Since it is a bit chilly outside (61 degrees!), Sam has decided that the best thing to do when we got home was to cuddle up and work on crossword puzzles.

Does anyone know a three-letter word meaning "disencumber"?

Sam also wants to catch up on his reading!

Excuse me, Mom? Have you seen the new "Chet the Dog" book?

We would also like to thank Olive for this pawsome award! Thank you, Olive!

In order to accept this award we have to list ten things that make us (Sam) happy!

Let's see...

1) Riding shotgun in the car
2) Yam treats
3) Scratches in that funny spot behind his ears that he can't reach
4) Treats
5) Taking walks
6) Chewies
7) Going to Petsmart
8) Munching on dog bones
9) Sleeping next to Dad
10) Sitting in Mom's lap

I would like to give this award to the following blogs - although I wish I could give it to everyone!

1)Sierra-Dog
2)Snowie Baby
3)Duncan
4)Lexi
5)Sir Chance
6)Luke
7)Jack
8)Kimba
9)Amber

…and for a little fun, Mom found this cute Golden video on YouTube!

...and yesterday's post? That is a scene from the BBC TV Series "Red Dwarf". If you haven't this show, it is worth watching!

SciFi Saturday Resumes

Sam and I (me, Aaron) love this show...

"Mr. Flibble's very cross. You shouldn't have run away from him. What are we going to do with them, Mr. Flibble? [. . .]

Oh, we can't possibly do that! Who would clear up the mess?"

Happy Valentine's Day!

Ummm... Mom? Can you help me make something in the craft room?

Can you help me find all the supplies I need?

These will work nicely!

I think I have everything.

Could you cut the paper for me, Mom?

Which hearts should we use?

What else does it need?

I think it is done!

I sure hope everyone likes it!

Happy Valentine's Day to all our friends!

Horse Show

We spent yesterday at the 55th Annual Scottsdale Arabian Horse Show. If you have never been to this, or have never heard about it, it is the largest show of its kind. Imagine a mini city that springs up around thousands of Arabian horses. Vendors come from all over with all sorts of things to sell, from trucks and trailers to clothing and jewelry. You don't even need to own a Arab to appreciate this event. Aaron and I have been going to it since we started dating, and last year we brought Sam for the first time. Of course, any event we can bring Sam along makes it even better!

The event last for nearly two weeks. All through the day horses are being shown in four separate rings. The events include equitation, dressage, reining, halter classes... the list goes on.

Aaron likes to call it the Scottsdale Horse and Golf Cart Show. Golf carts are available for rental - the show is held at Westworld and there is a lot of ground to cover. Some of the bigger barns bring their own, but everyone seems to have one of these. We think that there may be as many golf carts as horses at the event. Maybe even more!

We think Sam really likes to watch the contestants. We like to pick out which horse and rider we think is best, and then see who the judges picked.

"Hmmm... That one has excellent form..."

Of course, Sam also noticed two Standard Poodles at the event and spent a lot of his time looking for them and trying to act very cool when they were around.

This one seemed to really like him, although she did bark at him at first.

This one was dressed for the occasion - even her nails were painted.

Of course, there was tons of shopping to do - or "window" shopping in our case. They set up two huge white tents full of vendors. It is fun to walk through and look at everything! Sam's Mom had her eyes on a set of really pretty stirrups...

Hey, Mom? What about the Sam? When does Sam get something?

...although she also wanted this tractor to drag the home arena. Aaron pointed out that it wouldn't even fit through the gate...

One thing that is fun to look at is the decorations the big barns put up. They design patios and porches with lots of live plants to distinguish their barns from others. Of course, their horses are advertised on these false fronts. This was one of our favorites. Some of the stables actually haul this stuff with them, which is quite an endeavour considering a lot of these folks are from the east.

We had a really good day together, although by the end of the day we were all very tired. Sam had a wonderful day - he got lots of attention from people and lots of treats.

We don't have the heart to tell him he smells a little bit horsey and is very dusty and has a bath in his imminent future...

Grrr... Internet

We have been having our usual trouble with our internet service this past week. We are currently looking into new providers. Hopefully, we will have these issues permenantly fixed before too long!

We've had a very busy weekend. First off, we made more yams for Sam. He just adores these treats, and we are very happy to keep providing them for him. They taste good too! Sam has been rather upset to see his Mom snacking out of his bag of treats! We would like to thank our good friends Charlie and Sugar for supplying these recipes!

Here is Sam waiting for the yams to be done. He couldn't believe it when we told him they would have to stay in the oven for almost ten hours. He decided to watch the clock to make sure we don't forget them!

Monday was my birthday, so Sam, Aaron and I headed out to the Gilbert Riparian Institute to take a walk and watch the ducks. We had a wonderful day!

Sam really enjoyed himself. Here he is checking one of the decorative walls.

Many different varieties of ducks call the preserve home. We are wondering what this one is...

Sam found the water rather relaxing. He meditated for a long time in this spot. I wonder what he is thinking?

We are trying to get our internet up as quickly as we can! We miss visiting all of our friends and try to look at as many blogs as possible when it is up. Please be patient a little longer!

Wednesday Puppy Shot

This is Sam as a puppy. His favorite place to sleep was this popcorn bowl. He was such a mischievous little fellow he had to wear his leash at all times.
