The perils of walking Monty

In order to control Monty's extraordinary energy, walks are a must.  Sometimes, depending on how many witnesses there are, I even try to run with Monty.

...and yes, having no witnesses is a must...

You see, Monty is excellent at walking and he loves running.  Most of the time he is the picture of a perfect canine exercise partner.  He trots steadily and smoothly, no pulling on the leash, and can cover any distance quite easily.

Except every once in a while.  You never know when it will happen.  It could be the 12th outing or the 47th.

You will be cruising along, moving like a fine athlete and look down to admire your handsome pup by your side and realize he's watching you.

OMD, you realize in a panic, he's having a Walter Mitty moment.  ...and he thinks he's a cheetah!  (This varies - sometimes he thinks he's a wolf, or a panther, and once I think he was a shark.)

Worse yet?  He's a cheetah hunting prey, and you are a three-legged impala stuck in a mud puddle.

After that?  It's all down hill.

WHAM!

I have to admit, his take-down methods are pretty effective.  So far he has been 100% successful.
I is stalking you....
...and Aaron wonders why my shoes are always filled with gravel....

  1. That's really funny! I stopped running with dogs the day our Kasey spotted a squirrel during a run. Monty does look ready to tackle you.

  3. I feel your pain - my two westies can pull me down as well as pull out my shoulder and back - I can't imagine what a 'big dog' can do ...

  7. I had to laugh. I've been in those shoes too! My last post was about the same thing - walking / running with Thumper. Go read it. It was quite an adventure and I have scars to prove it!

  9. Haha! Monty, the Cheetah!! I have never experienced that, but I haven't run with Riley since I found out she had hip dysplasia when she was a puppy, so I never really gave her a chance to channel her inner shark or cheetah. :)

  10. I don't know if I can stop laughing long enough to comment. I will pull MOM out of her shoes sometimes if I see a cat cross the road. You would think she would be prepared for this after all these years.

  11. I completely understand your need for no witnesses. I only run in the dark with Blueberry. It's just less humiliating. I'm running for exercise, not for anyone's entertainment. ;)

I think it's funny that you never know when his inner imp will show itself!!

  12. Aww, I'm sure he doesn't mean it really, it's his way of showing love and affection.lol

  18. With Giz it's more like "Watch out, little dog underfoot...trip over leash...face plant" But only if he sees a squirrel or a duck :)

  19. Haha, that's funny(maybe not for your mom)!
I don't run with mom often. I like to stop to smell the roses (and whatever smell that's out there) and I also like to stop right in front of her!

  29. I had no idea that Monty had such talents (we need a video!)! One of our dogs has similar talents... but I'll let you guess which one!

    I hope that you're okay!

  30. I am very lucky that I can always have Tommy off leash on our walks because I no full well that there is no way I could even contemplate running with him as he tears around the fields! Running is a spectator sport!!!
