Special Olympics Tennis Fun Day

Sam had a very important day today - we joined our friends at AZGRC to participate in the Special Olympics Tennis Fun Day held at Troon Country Club. This gave us all a chance to share our Golden's with a wonderful group of athletes.

Plenty of kids - our dogs all received lots of attention!

Sam ready to start asking for donations to support his favorite rescue!

He was really loving all the attention he was getting!

(It was hard to get photos of Sam interacting with the kids. When the kids wanted to interact with him, I had to make sure to talk and interact too! No time for pictures. He was so well behaved and kind with them. He performed tricks for them and played fetch. I was so proud of our little guy!)

Sam wasn't the only pup asking for donations!

The Golden's offered support to whoever needed it. We didn't go out on the tennis courts, but we were available to anyone who wanted a little puppy love...

...and all were willing to be a little silly! Here is one boy who enjoys being rumpled! I wonder if he is related to our Monty?

Sam made all kinds of new friends!

...and like every little boy, wanted his picture taken with the fire truck.

We weren't the only dog group there - the Arizona Canine Musical Freestylers entertained the crowd with their awesome dance moves!

This big guy even got in on the dance moves! He was quite stylish!

...and of course, more Golden's! They danced to "I Like to Move It". (Think Madagascar...)

They invited the crowd to dance with them, and even Sam and I joined in! I'm hoping nobody took photos - Sam is an awesome dancer, but I am definitely not! (...and if there are photos - could someone send them to me, please?)

The event kept the dogs pretty busy - this is Casey (I hope I remembered the name right!) - he is almost 12 and is such a kind old boy!

Sam had an awesome day - we can't wait to help out AZGRC again!

Agility

Aaron and I had the chance today to stop in and watch an agility competition going on this weekend. We didn't take the boys along (don't tell them!) but really enjoyed watching the dogs do their stuff!

I'm having one of those days and needed a little cheering up. I always like looking back through the ~~thousands~~ hundreds of pictures I've taken of Sam and Monty. This photo is a particular favorite of mine. This is Sam and I at Boyce Thompson Arboretum in Superior, Arizona. It always makes me smile.

One of my favorite things to do is bringing Sam into work when the office is quiet.

The floor mats are very cool to Sam - he likes snoozing on them.

These pictures are from before Christmas - Sam is a good office dog. He's quiet, doesn't mind sleeping all day, and is happy to spend some time with his Mom.

However, right before Christmas, another dog was brought to the office that didn't have Sam's manners, especially in the potty department. Due to this, all dogs have been banned from the office. I haven't told my boy yet - I think he will be crushed!

Poor guy is going to be so disappointed!

Monty naps every day on the ottoman - these naps usually start around 10 am and last until about 2. Since he is slightly larger than the ottoman, he typically starts to slide off. Sometimes he wakes up and fixes himself and occasionally he falls completely off. When he hits this stage, Aaron and I start making bets on what will happen and how much longer it will take...

Meeting Someone Special

I am travelling this week, working at Saguaro National Monument.

Normally, I get pretty lonely and miss my boys terribly. This time, however, I got to meet someone very special!

I got to meet Jack and the Tall Guy, from Daily Dose of Jack!

Jack is a happy, energetic pup who spent our visit telling me all sorts of things! I couldn't keep up! He was also on the lookout for sticks and kept insisting a piece of gum on the ground had been left specifically for him. He was also very interested in my long hair.

Lady - there's a squirrel on your head!

Meeting Jack and the Tall Guy was definitely the high point of this trip! Thank you guys!

Thanksgiving - the day after...

We hope everyone had a wonderful Thanksgiving!

We shared the news on Facebook but we want to make sure everyone knows - Sam doesn't have Lymphoma! Turns out the suspicious lump was a fatty lump underneath the lymph node in his neck. The folks here at "How Sam Sees It" have been celebrating ever since we received this great news!

We had even more great news to be thankful for, when we learned our good friend the Bleu also received the best of news - REMISSION!

It definitely changed the spirit of our Thanksgiving celebration!

We did find a good use for the leftovers. As some of you know, we haven't been able to get a photo of the boys sitting next to each other. Oh, they will set near each other, but not actually next to each other. We think that they have some sort of strange "cootie" pact in place.

So out came the leftovers, and (ever mindful of delicate digestive systems) we attempted to get them to sit near each other. All we managed to do was get some great begging face photos...

Sam's Tooth

Hi dere! Sam here. Sam wanting to give update on Sam's tooth. If you remember, Monty stole it in a drive-by de-toothing! Sam been asked "Just what did the Tooth Fairy leave you?" Well, Sam has the most exciting present to show you!

Sam Update

We still don't have any news on Sam. Dr. Kerne isn't ready to come straight out and say he has lymphoma yet. She wants to run one more test - we will know the results either tomorrow or Wednesday. She is hoping that Sam is having an issue with a salivary gland. You can see the spot on his neck where she needle biopsied the suspicious lump.

I'm still happy!

To make matters worse, Monty, in a super-charged burst of puppy energy raced past Sam this morning and pulled a toy out of Sam's mouth which in turn pulled out one of Sam's teeth. Sam had to get one stitch to close the hole left behind.

I didn't mean it....

Two more days till we find out anything - please keep paws crossed!

Sibling Rivalry

Whiskey

My pet goat, Whiskey, died last night. An odd thing to mention, I know, on a dog blog, but Whiskey was part of our family.

Whiskey was about ten years old, and had been a part of the family for a long time. He was leash trained, which was always fun when you were taking the dogs for walks. It nearly guaranteed that someone in a car would stop to do a double take. He protected our small flock of chickens and ducks in his early days, and had quite a love affair with one duck in particular. One of his most infamous moments was when our neighbors dog decided to jump a 6 foot chain link fence to go after the chickens. My dad and I had to save the dog from Whiskey, who definitely was coming out the victor.

Whiskey, named after Cactus Jack's horse in "The Villain", was a typical head-butting, mischevious goat. He will be greatly missed.

They sent us a sample of their Golden Retriever 25 for the boys to try. While we knew Sam would be pleased with a new food to try, we were a little bit curious about how Monty would react. Remember, this is a boy who turns his nose up to most food!

Monty really likes it! Our hard to please boy picks out all of the pieces from the regular kibble and eats those first, plus, he seems excited to be served breakfast and dinner!

Our Monty has the prettiest eyes we've ever seen!

I had a few curious questions about calling Monty MONster. MONster is just one of the many fun nicknames he has, all plays on his name. He is also called MONTYbello, MONTish, MONTYsaurus Rex, MONTenero... anything we can come up with that uses the first few letters in his name.

Sam's got the same collection of odd nicknames - SAMster, SAMmish, SAMsonite...

So no worries - we don't really think of Monty as a monster! :D

Sam's Birthday Party

We celebrated Sam's birthday last night with a home made cake, dog treats, and a present for Sam! We had a little help from our friends for this party. We got the recipe for the cakes from Finn, and the recipe for the dog treats from Helios!

I added a little plain, low-fat yogurt as icing!

Sam and Monty couldn't wait to try a bit of the cake.

Monty the Genius

We are continuing to take Monty to agility on Wednesday evenings, although we aren't meeting with the success we are hoping to have. Monty will do okay on some things, but absolutely will refuse to try other things. So far, we haven't found a treat or toy that will motivate Monty. He has turned his nose up to cheese, hot dogs and even meatballs! The past Wednesday, the instructors declared that it must be because Monty is a genius! They believe we haven't hit on things that interest him yet, and are boring him with the basics!

Having said this, Monty has been looking at all his options, just in case he decided not to pursue a career in agility. We've been getting all kinds of catalogs in the mail for him - MIT, Harvard, Yale...

Hmmmm... Where should I go?

I'm hoping Monty choses Harvard - that's my Alma Mater!

Trains!

The weather here in Arizona is finally turning nice, and we decided to have fun this weekend! We joined our blogging friends, Brenda and Eugene, from Brenda's Arizona and headed over to McCormick-Stillman Railroad Park to enjoy Railfair 2011!

Since it has been a while since he has had an adventure, I took Sam along. Monty stayed at home with Aaron - after seeing some of the train displays, I think it might have been the better decision. Monty has been known to be a little, ummm... destructive..., in his happy-puppy-go-lucky kind of way!

Sam's excited to go!

The park is beautiful. There is a carousel, several engines and cars on display, a museum, and a building housing train layouts from four separate clubs! There is also a narrow gauge train that takes you for rides around the park.

Sam was a little startled at first to meet Sophie - she is a very happy and exuberant pup! After the first few minutes though, they were good friends and willing to explore the park together.

Unfortunately, dogs aren't allowed in the museum and on the train, so we had to take turns to look at some of the displays - it worked out well though!

I did manage to take Sam into this little museum. He was getting so much attention that he wanted it from everyone, including this guy...

Of course, he was also getting a little tired. Sam has never liked sitting on hard surfaces, so when he gets a chance he sits in my lap!

We've entered Monty in a basic agility class. This is our second class (sorry the picture is so blurry - it was dark by the time class started), and despite our worries, Monty is doing fine!

What were our worries? Well, Monty is not food oriented and toys can be very distracting to him. In fact, the only thing that motivates Monty is Monty! As long as I make it seem like it was his idea all along, he does great!

Updates!

Hi there!! You probably have noticed that there has been a lack of activity here at "How Sam Sees It". Although updating the blog has been pretty slow, our household activities have been anything but!

I've been preparing my Friesian stallion, Baron, and mare, Isabel, for a Keuring coming up in September. This is an important judging, especially for Baron!

...but we haven't forgotten our boys either!

The weather has been too hot to do much with them outside, so we've been keeping them occupied indoors with antlers, tennis balls, and lots of home made treats!

Mom makes us cheesy, chicken goodies!

We've also began making tentative plans for a very special boy's 9th birthday! We will keep you all updated!

I'm going to be 9 years young!

Mom had another headache test on Monday - and the results show nothing. She really appreciated everyone's thoughts and comments, and will try some of them! Thank you everyone!

The Headache Diet

Some of you may have seen these on Facebook, but for those of you who haven't...

In order to try and figure out my headaches, Aaron and I went on a "Reboot" diet - nothing but vegetables and vegetable juice for 15 days. The diet affected the boys differently, especially poor Monty!

Here is a recap of our diet!

Today is Day 1 of an all vegetable diet (vegan, actually) that we are hoping will help my headaches. So far, all we've managed to do is horrify Monty!

Day 2 of the Headache Diet - Monty is laying in the grass refusing to come back into the house, despairing that he will never see another steak in his lifetime... Sam has discovered a previously unknown passion for broccoli...

Day 3 of the Headache Diet... Monty has taken to commiserating with the grill, while Sam happily has ordered a salad along with his kibble...

Day 4 of the Headache Diet - Found Monty on-line last night trying to order a years worth of steak, Sam has just put his finishing touches on his miniature recreation of the Taj Majal made entirely of lettuce and kale...

Day 5 of the Headache Diet - Found Monty's last will and testament written in blue crayon... Found Sam reading Arizona Vegetable Growers Digest...

Day 6 of the Headache Diet - Monty was discovered trying to trade Sam's favorite blue bear to the Yorkie next door for a slice of bacon... Sam has plowed the backyard and planted lettuce...

Day 7 of the Headache Diet - Found tunnel leading from our laundry room to the beef jerky section of Walgreens, suspect Monty... Sam is really starting to look like a farmer and he's expecting a bumper crop of lettuce this year...

Day 8 of the Headache Diet - Noticed on the phone bill several calls to cattle ranch in Texas. After calling the ranch, found out several orders have been placed with them and to expect 10 head to be delivered on the 12th - suspect Monty... Sam has asked if he can enter his prize turnips in the county fair...

Day 9 of the Headache Diet - Got a call from a publisher, Monty can expect his first royalty check this week for his tell all book "My Days Without Meat - What my people did to me"... Sam is building fence to keep Monty's cattle out of his lettuce.

Day 10 of the Headache Diet - Well, the diet is temporarily over - it seems my stomach can't handle a diet of pure vegetables. Aaron immediately went out to buy me crackers and himself a steak, which Monty immediately held a parade for. He had everything - balloons, a marching band, floats... Sam, while thrilled steak had return, asked if he could finish my uneaten salad.

Day 11 of the Headache Diet - Despite a setback, Aaron has decided that we will continue with the diet. We only have 5 days left. Monty is inconsolable and refuses to leave his bed, Sam has just endorsed his own brand of salad dressing.

Day 12 of the Headache Diet - A new supply of antlers arrived for the boys yesterday, Monty and Sam temporarily distracted. I, however, would really like pancakes (no processed foods, flour, etc. allowed!)...

...and the post that made us decide to go off of the diet...

I made the boys dog treats tonight. It's probably the diet talking, but boy, do they taste good!

So, we made it through 12 days and my headache is the same. We will try something else, and I think both boys are thrilled things are back to normal!

Diet and Kong Toys

In an effort to try to make my headache's better and maybe find out what causes them, Aaron and I are going on a strict vegetable diet. As we head into Day 4, we are both doing okay. Monty, on the other hand, is in distress that all that is in the house are vegetables. He's taken to laying out in the planter box and refusing to come in.

Sam on the other hand, is happy with salad! We've noticed his weight is edging up, so this will be a good opportunity for us to trim him down.

In an effort to make it up to Monty, we bought both of the boys Kong toys. These are the first ones they have had.

Sam immediately cleaned his out, doing it from this unusual standing up position. I tried to show him it would be easier if he laid down, but he seemed quite offended by the suggestion.

Monty, however, found his Kong to be a moment of pure bliss!

Monty in the AKC?

Well, after some careful thinking, we've decided to enroll Monty in the AKC's Purebred Alternative Listing/Indefinite Listing Program. We'd really like to be able to participate in rally, obedience and agility with Monty. Arizona does not hold many dog events of this type, but this will allow us to participate in more events!

This also means we are going to have to do some serious sessions with our goofy boy! He is doing very well with his sits and downs, but "stay" isn't in his agenda yet.

Our goal is to have him ready for his first event by February!

Dog Days of Summer

It is hot outside. Really hot... We've been limited in what we can do with the boys, and what we ourselves can do. What does this mean overall? Well, for one thing, the blog hasn't been very exciting lately!

The most movement seen at our house this weekend was giving the boys a bath. As you can imagine, Sam wasn't happy with this! Worse yet, I've tried a new dog shampoo and it's made him a little fluffy...

You've ruined my doo!

You may be wondering what else we might have done this weekend. Well, Monty didn't mind showing you...

The boys had a bath on Sunday before I left. Sam, of course, has been working on some new tricks to avoid taking the dreaded bath.

His first new trick is his patented "Chameleon" maneuver. Here he is attempting to make himself blend into the couch. It almost worked - I told him next time try not to wear a leash.

Not to be discouraged, he moved right into the "Hide Behind the Pillow" maneuver.

This might have worked, except Monty decided to help give Sam a bath.

Play time with Monty

Our boy Monty is quite a rough-housing pup. There is nothing he likes more than a little "rumpling"* with Mom. It doesn't matter what the game is, Monty is ready to give it his all!

Tennis balls are some of his favorite toys, right up there with anything with squeakers, soda bottles, and sun light.

I just stole this from Sam!

Tug-of-war is also one of his favorites. We are very mindful of his teeth (we don't want to pull them out!), but he does like to wrestle for his toys. We just found these road-kill squirrels in Wal-Mart. No stuffing and with squeakers on each end.

Monty has also learned that making "eyes" sometimes wins him the toy!

Something's afoot!

Sam here. Sam and Monty doing some super sleuthing. Something going on. Sam not like it.

The black box is being filled with Mom's clothes. Last time this happened. Mom went away. Travelling for work, she said.

What!?

Sam also give you update on Monty's jail time. The crime was most serious. Monty tried to mug a biker. Mom thinks he was after his shiny earings. Thank goodness biker Dad's friend.

Monty had to go to court. Here he is outside court. He is thinking he will get off easy-peasy. Sam like word easy-peasy. Sam adores peas.

...but he was very contrite in front of the judge.

It'll never happen again, you honor, I promise.

Monty has community service to do. Then he free and clear. Here he is entertaining kids.

Monty promises to behave, but he not allowed within 20 feet of bikers, per Mom and Dad.

In the mean time, Sam spend time near the great Milk-Bone tower. This most scenic, peaceful place in house. ...and tasty.

Weekend Update

Sam here, Sam giving you update on weekend. Mom and Dad are close to being fired, again.

First of all, Mom and Dad busy most of weekend. Something about cleaning Grandma's yard. Sam could have helped, but no, Sam not invited. Sam had to beg to be fed! Here is proof.

Sam did occasionally get some food.

Mom did find time to make Sam and Monty new collars. Here is picture of Sam's. You will have to wait to see Monty's. He is in jail. Something about trying to join a motorcycle gang or start riot. Sam not quite sure.

Here is also picture of Monty, just so you remember him.

Mom also spent time with her Friesian stallion, Baron. Mom say he our big brother. Sam not sure about this, not see resemblance. That is trainer, Jeremy Cluff, in the pictures.

We hope you all had a wonderful Memorial Day and remembered to thank our soldiers and veterans.

Sam is doing much better tonight, to our relief. He is eating with his usual apetite, wants to play, and overall is feeling like his old self. He still seems plagued by the runs, but even that is looking better (I won't go into details!). We are still concerned about why he was sick, though. One minute he was prancing around being silly, and then all of the sudden he laid down and was ill. We might be over reacting, but he is our boy and we love him.

Sam definitely needs a good thorough brushing!

Poor Sam is Sick

Poor Sam has been sick all this afternoon. He hasn't been interested in food, which is pretty alarming with him. We've been taking him out quite a bit to avoid accidents, and have just tried to comfort him.

Monty has also taken an interest in Sam's welfare. He's been very gentle with Sam, and has even kept him company on occassion.

We are hoping Sam will feel better in the morning - we've had these episodes before. Sam has a very fragile digestive system, and it doesn't take much to upset him.

We have something exciting to show you. Do you remember a loooong time ago, I posted about a very special photo shoot starring Sam? Sam was recently featured in an article about pet safety for Cliff Notes, the newspaper published by the Rangers at Tonto National Monument.

Happy Mother's Day

Dear Mom, (Dis Sam typing - his blog, after all!)

Monty and Sam wanted to get you a nice present this year, but we didn't have any money and we were going to get you some flowers from the yard, but we knew how much you like to see them in the yard.

We wanted to get you something that said how much we love you. You always clean our messes up without saying anything, you always stop to rub our ears and tell us we good dogs, and you always take the time to play with us - the games we like too! Chasing Sam around the pool table and rumpling Monty in the living room. You never too busy for us, you always talk to us, and you always bring us good things from the store.

Monty says to add that you always keep us clean and give us baths, although Sam doesn't see the nice in that, but Monty says to add it anyways. You make us collars and remember to keep treats in our jar. We your boys and we know it.

Monty and Sam want to wish you a very Happy Mother's Day, to the best doggy Mom we have! We love you, Mom!

That was a bad idea...

Have you ever bought your pups a toy, and realized only later that it was a bad idea?

Wal-Mart had a sale on giant tennis balls, and being a thoughtful doggy Mom, I bought both Sam and Monty each one.

Sam was happy with his, but after rolling it around for a few minutes, decided he liked tennis balls that he could carry a bit more...

Thanks, Mom, it's very nice.

Monty was overjoyed. He took one look at his ball and promptly challenged it to a fight to the death!

Thank goodness we don't have anything fragile! For a few minutes it sounded like a wild bull was loose in our house!

Monty eventually fought it to a standstill.

It's getting tired, Dad!

...and finally Monty managed to pop it! Elapsed time: 8 minutes and 34 seconds...

A Pleasant Surprise

Remember back in February, Monty and I participated in the PetSmart Charities Petswalk? Well, much to my surprise, we got a special gift in the mail!

They sent us a toy for Monty (who promptly claimed it after Sam modeled for this picture) and a water bottle for me! The timing is great; I was looking for a new water bottle!

Both Monty and Sam have picked up a stomach bug that has left them with the runs, and in Monty's case, one bout of vomiting. Originally it began with Monty over the weekend, and we assumed he had picked up something in the yard. After all, if it isn't nailed down he will try to eat it. Monty seemed to be fine by Sunday evening.

Yesterday, however, Sam started having issues. If you all remember, Sam has had a couple of episodes that has required him to stay at the vet for several days. We would desperately like to avoid that, especially since we are not sure Dr. Kerne has forgiven us for staging a daring jailbreak and busting him out the last time! Neither boy has a temperature, and the runs have been thankfully controllable with a few extra outside trips. We've also been picking our brains trying to think of what they might have gotten into. We've have thoroughly washed their dishes, and remain convinced that they found something in the yard.

As you can see, the boys barely have any strength to remain upright.

We've switched the boys over to the standard bland diet - lean ground beef and rice. This time we are also trying something new. I've heard so much about giving a few spoonfuls of pumpkin, that we picked up a can and have properly dosed the boys. Sam is in absolute doggy heaven - he is getting a variety of people food, which is his goal in life. We weren't sure Monty would eat the pumpkin, but found out he absolutely loves it!

It's the rice he is suspicious of!

Dinner is served! Even though Monty is better, he is also getting the bland diet, although his is mixed with kibble.

Keep your paws crossed that Sam will be fine and we will be able to avoid a stay at the vet. For now, we are glad he still has his appetite!

April Flowers

Well, I think summer has reached us here in Arizona even though officially it is spring. The weather people have threatened us with 100 degree days this weekend, although the latest check has us firmly in the mid 90's. We don't think we will see many flowers this year - we had to cut back many of our plants due to the severe frost we had this winter, but a few of them are managing to show some flowers.

This trumpet vine is bursting with flowers. This actually belongs to our neighbor but has grown over our wall. We love it and don't mind at all!

Our white Lady Bank's Rose has also survived. Mom loves this vine, but does not recommend them for small yards. If we aren't vigilant with keeping it cut back, it quickly overtakes our yard and all the other plantings in it. He is kind of hard to see, but Sam is sitting in front of it. Monty is looking for sunbeams!

We don't think we will see too many other flowers. Our beautiful Orange Jubilee bushes have taken a tremendous hit from the frost, as well as our Bird of Paradise, lantana and ruellia. We've had to cut most of these down to ground level!

Last year we tried growing flowers in pots, but those didn't last once Monty came. We are not sure we will try those again! April is actually a very important month for us at "How Sam Sees It". First of all, next week will be our 2nd Blogiversary! Also, April 22nd will be Monty's Gotcha Day! Can you believe our beautiful boy has been with us for a year already?

2011 PetSmart Charities Petwalk

Monty and I had a wonderful time at the PetSmart Charities PetWalk held yesterday. We participated in the 5K walk and enjoyed seeing so many different breeds!

There was so much to see and do!

This was the last photo I was able to take before the downpour started! By the time we got back to the park, and then the car, Monty and I were thoroughly soaked!

Despite the rain, we had a great time! Monty smiled through the whole event - I would definitely say he is looking forward to next year!

Lazy Weekend
