When fruit gets personal...

As you all may remember, our Sam had quite the appreciation for fruits and vegetables.  Most of his training for agility earned him carrot slivers as a reward.  Nothing made our boy happier then a bit of lettuce or a slice of apple.

That isn't the case with Monty and Harlow.  Monty has gotten to the point he won't take anything from me without inspecting it first.  I slipped him some broccoli early on and he still hasn't forgotten...
Iz watching you, Momma.
Harlow, on the other paw, is still learning.  This morning I thought she might like to try a little banana.  She took it happily enough, but once she had it, she realized it wasn't the treat she thought it was.  She proceeded to hold it for about 15 minutes, looking the whole time like she may need to get sick...

I wish I had photos....

Eventually she spit it out and the gooey little blob landed on her front leg.

Which immediately freaked her out.

Still no photos, but I found a video that is very similar to her reaction:  (Not our pups at all - but this pup obviously has banana somewhere on his fuzzy being)
I finally had to tackle her to get her to hold still so I could get it off.

Harlow spent the rest of the day like this:
Years of therapy...
...and yes, I massaged her toes for her....

PeeEssWoo: I only like bananas when they are furry furm - my mom is like that too - as soon as they get the least bit soft, she khan't eat 'em - so we turn them into bonesikhle filling with yogurt and peanut butter!

  4. Nikita, our very first Siberian Husky, absolutely loved the smell of bananas. Unfortunately, she didn't like the taste.

So, the hu-dad would peel a banana and Nikita would be at his feet begging for a bite. Hu-dad would relent and give her a piece of banana. Nikita would swirl it around in her mouth, look thoroughly disgusted, and then spit the now saliva covered, sticky banana bite onto the floor.

And then she would start begging hu-dad for another bite because surely the NEXT bite was going to be as good as it smelled.

    This went on for years.

  8. Harlow, poor Harlow! We have no doubt that your therapy will require lots of globs of peanut butter, scratchies, and catering to. How could your mother have tortured you like that?!? And Monty, I'm with you - broccoli? Blerg. We think you BOTH need to keep a VERY close eye on your Mom.

  10. Too funny! Lucy loves apples and carrots but her very favorite is a canned green bean. I keep them in the fridge for her and all I have to say is "bean" and she is right there.

  11. Laughing so hard! Shyla had a similar reaction to a slice of banana, carrying it around in her mouth looking like she was going to hurl. But, fortunately, when she finally spit it out, it didn't stick to her!

    Poor, poor Harlow!

  19. Oh my dog! I don't even know if therapy is enough. But it is quite funny reading this post.
I don't like veggies and mom knows not to give them to me. She has found a way to add more veggies in my diet. She will make broth and then give me the veggies she used to make it (not the onions though).

  20. LOL!!!! That's hilarious!!

Blueberry is not a big fan of fruit or veggies either...however, if she sees ME eating it - she will force herself to eat it too if I offer it. Usually she'll just swallow it so she doesn't really have to taste it.

  21. Oh my! Are you OK, Harlow? What a harrowing experience!
