Sometimes...

Most evenings I take Sam for a walk.
My Sam
Sometimes we make it around a block, and sometimes all we do is sit on the front lawn like the two old friends we are.

Sometimes I remind him of all the adventures we've had, and sometimes we just sit quietly and watch the neighbors come home, my hand on his back and his paw on my knee.

Sometimes we bring Monty along, or Harlow, but sometimes, I think the walks he likes best right now are the one where it is just the two of us.
From the archives
Sometimes he does his business on our walks, something he has never done before.  He seems embarrassed by it, and I hug him after I clean it up and tell him sometimes it happens.

Sometimes we pass people and I ask them if they like dogs.  If they say yes, I ask them if they would mind petting Sam - because he loves people.  ...and sometimes they do.

We keep hoping we will have many days left with him, but sometimes it hits me hard that one day all too soon I'll have to take my first walk without him.
Which way, Mom?

Sometimes I don't take my sunglasses off, even though it is dark outside, because I don't want him to see me crying.

  2. I am crying with you. It is a long, slow goodbye, like what we had with our Rosie. You will never regret the moments you are having now.

  3. This is so lovely and very true. I can relate to so much of it because Pip is nearing the end. Last night we sat on the porch and watched the neighborhood kids and dogs playing. Pip was happy just to watch, but I know part of him wished he could still run and play

  48. This was a beautiful post. I was never able to master the multiple dog walk, and it used to frustrate me.

But now that I have two seniors, and a third, younger dog, who keeps getting mast cell tumors - I really enjoy the one on one walks. :-)

    Make every moment count, right?

  59. Sometimes its just great to just have the moments... and seriously.. its all that matters. No matter how many moments u might have left with Sam... make each one of them count. Lift up your chin.. take off your sunnies and smile. Dogs can feel your sadness and the dog that loves you a lot will feel sad with you. My Dommy is old too.. i just let him be happy best he knows how. We do not fear the end because we are both enjoying the present. *HUGS*

  69. Ohhh...this post nearly had me wearing sunglasses too. Wish I could do something - all I can say is that I'm thinking of you from far away, even if I'm too busy to comment (the Big Honey Dog Mysteries book launch is just taking over my life right now!)but I think of you & Sam every day.

Btw, Honey often "does her business" on her walk now - on the pavement - something that she NEVER did all her life. And she seems a bit embarrassed by it. But it's all part of ageing and not having so much "control" anymore. So Honey says to tell Sam not to feel bad - he's not the only one :-)

I don't pray but I'm really hoping that you will have many more happy days with Sam,

    Hsin-Yi (& Slobbers with Honey)
