A little bit of adventure....

This summer will be a little bit different for those of us at How Sam Sees It.  I've been assigned a detail in a park outside of Arizona (CLUE #1) for two months.  I've been given permission to bring a pup along and am furiously knocking on wood hoping that doesn't change.  After some deliberation we decided Harlow would be the best candidate, due mainly to the fact that she rides quietly in the car and has a good recall.  Plus, Monty can get a little panicky in strange situations and likes to dig - floor, furniture, people...  (...and just recently I noticed he tried to dig a hole in my riding boots!).  Plus, Aaron would be a little lost without his Monty.

I've decided to do a "Guess My Location" game.  The first person who can guess where we are heading between now and May 22nd, based on the clues I'll give in the next couple of weeks, will win a prize.  I haven't quite got the prize together, but will try to come up with something fun.  The first person who guesses the correct park (for those that don't know - I work for the National Park Service.) will win.  NPS employees who already know cannot play - sorry guys!  Let me know your guesses by commenting below.

Harlow is getting her suitcase packed and I never realized how difficult it would be!  We've had her at the vets to make sure she is up-to-date on shots, verified her microchip is still accounted for, and have packed enough poop bags to last a year.  While our leave date isn't until the end of May, I don't want to forget anything!

For those of you that travel with your pups, any suggestions on things to bring?

  3. What a fun adventure you two gals will have together!! I do love to travel with the dogs. My advice is what you already no doubt know... Extra leash and collar with plenty of ID, just in case....

  7. When Barley and I are going to be anywhere new and different, I bring her mat (and a crate if there's not one where we're going)--Barley likes to know where her "safe place" is when we're in a new place and if there isn't a mat or bed that she knows is hers, she'll spend a lot of time pacing looking for her spot. How exciting that you two will be going on a summer adventure!

  10. My mom be doing that too - starts packing a month before then furgets what she alreddy packed. My mom's advice fur packing: Better to have and not need than to need and not have. We is lucky there be room for me in the hikemobile. One time mom had to take stuff out of the hikemobile to make room for ME when we was going on a trip to Furginia and that be when she hads the SUV!

  11. How exciting - a road trip. We travel a lot with the boys and they are awesome travelers - they basically sleep the whole time. Main thing is to keep bottles of waters and a dish in your car, some treats if she doesn't have the queasy tummy travel problem and poop bags. Something we learned traveling from Arkansas to Florida is to get some sun shields for your back windows (we just got those stick on ones) dogs get a lot hotter in cars then we do - even with the air conditioning on and laying in the sun in back seat or in a crate can be really hot for them. We also kept some small wet towels in a bag for them - we could wipe their faces and ears down to help keep them cool and also wipe their feet as you don't always know what kinds of plants they will step on at rest stops.

  15. What an adventure you will have. I'm with Beth. Lucy would be lost without her own bed and pillows. Don't worry too much about what to take. I'm sure the mail service will deliver anything you need.

  16. Hmmm, what to bring depends on where you're going :) Is the pink Princess bag a hint?

I always make sure that I know where there's a good regular vet and a good vet ER when I travel with our pups. Plus, I bring extras of any meds they take. Shyla and R are yelling that you shouldn't forget to bring LOTS and LOTS of treats!

  17. That sounds like a fabulous adventure, Harlow! I travel with #1 whenever she can take me along and she says it is more complicated to pack for me than for herself. High on the list is a comfy bed, of course. I have a great one that folds up for travel. And my blankie to go on it. My own food, of course, and lots of treats! In France, if you take your pet for than a few dozen km from home, you're supposed to carry their "passport" with all shots and microchip indicated. Oh, and we always take along basic veterinary stuff too, just in case. Wonder if we'll be able to guess where you are going?

    Tommy
